STEP 1: FINDING YOUR LEVEL OF PLAY
One of the things we get asked the most is how to find the right level of play for our classes and to allow players to meet similar, like minded players. We have a simple rating system that can help you self-assess your game and get started. Or why not book in for one of our trials days or arrange an assessment lesson to get started and have your level of play ranked.
01
Beginner
New to tennis? Our entry level is for complete beginners who have not played rackets sports before or who need to develop co-ordination to play.
02
Improver / Rusty Racket
This level is aimed at players who have previous experience of playing or who have already taken tennis lessons. The level is quite mixed but aims to link players who are learning to develop skills in their serve, rally and scoring situations.
03
Club / Low Intermediate
Players at this level can hold their own in a rally, have developed use of skills on courts such as spin and direction and are comfortable in scoring situations. This is the level where we recommend players starting to play more competitive tennis.
04
High Intermediate
If you can play at this level then you are starting to master the game. Players can play with speed and skill, cover all of the court or read the game well, and play tennis on a regular basis.
05
Advanced
Our highest level is advanced and this describes players who have played team tennis for their local club at a high level, former county junior players, college players or players who are able to hold their own on court in a quick game of tennis both on serve and in rallies.
More Information
If you are unsure what class to choose then we recommend coming to a trial class or requesting a chance to play with one of our coaching team who can assess your game and make a professional suggestion on where to get started.
All of our coaches can help a wide range of players develop their interest in playing and their level of play. Our adult program features a range of other services that are suitable to take part in once you've found your feet. These include social tennis afternoons, matchplay sessions and competitions such as box leagues.
Program Highlight: Social Tennis
If you are confident enough to start playing with other players and can hold a rally on court, then social tennis or "club sessions" are a good option to expand your skills and meet friends on court. These are low cost or free classes where players organise social games of tennis themselves or with the help of a coach.
We have more of these sessions in the summer months but do run club social tennis sessions throughout the year. From Autumn 2025, we will be running social tennis as follows:
- Wednesday 9.30-11am at Carlisle Park
- Sunday 2.30-4pm at Kneller Gardens
We hope to also run an evening class under lights in due course at one of our partner venues at Hampton High or Whitton Sports Centre.
